PRIA over the past two years has been working collectively with the urban poor community in the Slums of Raipur and facilitated the organisation of Slum Improvement Committees (SIC) as a representative body of the slum dwellers for their own community. These SICs are a tool of empowerment for the community and play a vital role as an interface between the demand side (community) and the supply side (State and Centre).
Two slums that PRIA has been successful in formulating SIC are the non-tenable slums adjacent to the Railway line: Indrabhata & Chandrashekhar Nagar. SIC members of these two slums have been successful in demanding their rights by asking for a sustainable rehabilitation abode under Rajiv Awas Yojana from the city officials. Regular interaction with the Collector and Commissioner of Raipur Municipal Corporation has resulted in an assurance from the Commissioner of dwelling units at Saddu under the Basic Services of Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme of JNNURM and regular meetings with the community for their participation.
