Srinagar, Mar 13: An ambitious plan for a ‘home’ each to thousands of poor families in Jammu and Kashmir is lying in disarray for the past three years.
Under Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation had approved Rs 81.50 crore project in 2009 for providing housing units to poor families and slum dwellers in the capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu.
While Rs 22.50 crore were approved for 822 dwelling units in Srinagar, Jammu got the highest booty of Rs 59 crore for 1457 units under the project.
Pertinently, Kashmir Valley has the highest slum population of more than 86,000 people while the figures are just 7000 in Jammu.
Official data reveals that the scheme – Basic Service for Urban Poor – to be implemented by the Municipal Corporations in Srinagar and Jammu is nowhere near completion with around 158 housing units of the targeted 2300 dwelling units completed since the initiation of the project in 2009.
